Forex Market Hours Today: Open and Close Times in Your Time Zone
The forex market opens on Sunday at 22:00 UTC and closes on Friday at 22:00 UTC while New York is on winter time, until 14 March 2027. In New York’s summer time both times are one hour earlier, 21:00 UTC. The calculator shows every session in your own time zone.
What time does the forex market open and close?
The forex market opens on Sunday at 22:00 UTC and closes on Friday at 22:00 UTC, and trades 24 hours a day in between. Those times hold during New York's winter time, from early November to mid-March; in its summer time both are one hour earlier, 21:00 UTC. The calculator above shows them in your time zone.
The week runs from 17:00 New York time on Sunday to 17:00 New York time on Friday, the convention brokers use; OANDA, for example, opens forex at 17:05 on Sunday and closes at 16:59 on Friday, New York time. The offsets below do not change their clocks, so only New York's change moves the times:
| New York time | Market opens | Market closes |
|---|---|---|
| Summer time (second Sunday in March to first Sunday in November) | Sunday 21:00 UTC; Sunday 22:00 UTC+1 (West and Central Africa); Sunday 23:00 UTC+2 (Southern Africa); Monday 04:00 UTC+7 (mainland Southeast Asia); Monday 05:00 UTC+8 (maritime Southeast Asia and East Asia) | Friday 21:00 UTC; Friday 22:00 UTC+1; Friday 23:00 UTC+2; Saturday 04:00 UTC+7; Saturday 05:00 UTC+8 |
| Winter time (first Sunday in November to second Sunday in March) | Sunday 22:00 UTC; Sunday 23:00 UTC+1; Monday 00:00 UTC+2; Monday 05:00 UTC+7; Monday 06:00 UTC+8 | Friday 22:00 UTC; Friday 23:00 UTC+1; Saturday 00:00 UTC+2; Saturday 05:00 UTC+7; Saturday 06:00 UTC+8 |
New York is on winter time from 1 November 2026 until 14 March 2027, when it moves back to summer time. The calculator above shows the live status, with a countdown to the next open or close, in your device's time zone or in UTC.
Is the forex market open today?
From Monday to Thursday the forex market is open all day and all night. On Friday it is open until 22:00 UTC, or 21:00 UTC in New York's summer. It is closed on Saturday, and on Sunday it opens at 22:00 UTC, or 21:00 UTC in summer. The calculator converts these times into your local clock.
The line at the top of the calculator answers the question for this moment, from your device's clock. Some symbols, such as stock CFDs and indices, keep shorter hours than currency pairs, and markets can close early on public holidays. MetaTrader 5 lists each symbol's sessions in its specification.
What are the forex market hours by session?
The forex market trades through four main sessions, Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York, each following the business day of its own city. With the UK and US on winter time, London runs from 08:00 to 17:00 UTC and New York from 13:00 to 22:00 UTC, so they overlap from 13:00 to 17:00 UTC.
The table covers early November to mid-March, when the UK and US are on winter time and Sydney is on Australian summer time:
| Session | Local hours | UTC | UTC+1 (West and Central Africa) | UTC+2 (Southern Africa) | UTC+7 (mainland Southeast Asia) | UTC+8 (maritime Southeast Asia and East Asia) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 07:00 to 16:00 | 20:00 to 05:00 | 21:00 to 06:00 | 22:00 to 07:00 | 03:00 to 12:00 | 04:00 to 13:00 |
| Tokyo | 09:00 to 18:00 | 00:00 to 09:00 | 01:00 to 10:00 | 02:00 to 11:00 | 07:00 to 16:00 | 08:00 to 17:00 |
| London | 08:00 to 17:00 | 08:00 to 17:00 | 09:00 to 18:00 | 10:00 to 19:00 | 15:00 to 00:00 | 16:00 to 01:00 |
| New York | 08:00 to 17:00 | 13:00 to 22:00 | 14:00 to 23:00 | 15:00 to 00:00 | 20:00 to 05:00 | 21:00 to 06:00 |
| London and New York overlap | 13:00 to 17:00 | 14:00 to 18:00 | 15:00 to 19:00 | 20:00 to 00:00 | 21:00 to 01:00 |
On Sunday night Sydney starts when the market reopens, at 22:00 UTC. The calculator works each row out for today, in your time zone, so it is always current. How the sessions differ, and why the overlaps are busier, is covered in the lesson Forex Trading Sessions.
What are the session times in summer?
From late March to late October the UK and US are on summer time, so London runs from 07:00 to 16:00 UTC and New York from 12:00 to 21:00 UTC, an hour earlier than in winter. Tokyo stays at 00:00 to 09:00 UTC all year, and Sydney moves an hour later while Australia is on winter time.
| Session | UTC | UTC+1 (West and Central Africa) | UTC+2 (Southern Africa) | UTC+7 (mainland Southeast Asia) | UTC+8 (maritime Southeast Asia and East Asia) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney (Australian winter time) | 21:00 to 06:00 | 22:00 to 07:00 | 23:00 to 08:00 | 04:00 to 13:00 | 05:00 to 14:00 |
| Tokyo | 00:00 to 09:00 | 01:00 to 10:00 | 02:00 to 11:00 | 07:00 to 16:00 | 08:00 to 17:00 |
| London | 07:00 to 16:00 | 08:00 to 17:00 | 09:00 to 18:00 | 14:00 to 23:00 | 15:00 to 00:00 |
| New York | 12:00 to 21:00 | 13:00 to 22:00 | 14:00 to 23:00 | 19:00 to 04:00 | 20:00 to 05:00 |
| London and New York overlap | 12:00 to 16:00 | 13:00 to 17:00 | 14:00 to 18:00 | 19:00 to 23:00 | 20:00 to 00:00 |
London opens at 08:00 London time all year; every shift comes from the UK, the US or Australia changing their clocks. The UK and the US together handle more than half of global forex turnover: about 38% and 19% in the BIS survey of April 2025.
What is the best time to trade forex?
The busiest time to trade forex is the London and New York overlap, 13:00 to 17:00 UTC in UK and US winter time and 12:00 to 16:00 UTC in their summer time. The two largest trading centres are open together, so the major pairs usually see the most trading, the tightest spreads and the largest moves.
A busier window means more price movement in both directions, so size each trade with the position size calculator before you place it. For example, at 14:00 UTC on a Wednesday in January, London (08:00 to 17:00 UTC) and New York (13:00 to 22:00 UTC) are both open, so that moment is inside the overlap. It is 15:00 at UTC+1, 16:00 at UTC+2, 21:00 at UTC+7 and 22:00 at UTC+8. The country guides show how traders fit the sessions around a working day.
How does daylight saving change the hours?
Each session keeps its local hours, so when a country changes its clocks, the session moves by an hour in UTC. The UTC+1, UTC+2, UTC+7 and UTC+8 offsets above do not use daylight saving, so every shift you see in them comes from the UK, the US or Australia changing their clocks.
The dates:
- The UK is on summer time (BST) from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. London then opens at 07:00 UTC.
- The US is on summer time from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. New York then opens at 12:00 UTC.
- Australia's summer time runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April, so Sydney then opens an hour earlier, at 20:00 UTC.
- Japan does not change its clocks.
The 2026-27 dates: the UK went to winter time on 25 October 2026 and moves to summer time on 28 March 2027; the US moves to winter time on 1 November 2026 and to summer time on 14 March 2027; Sydney moved to summer time on 4 October 2026 and moves back on 4 April 2027.
For a few weeks in March and in October or November, only one side has changed, so the London and New York overlap is an hour shorter or longer than usual.
What does each input mean?
The calculator has one input, the time zone the table is shown in, and it reads the time from your device's clock. From that it shows whether the market is open today, a countdown to the next session open or close, and each session's status, with daylight saving applied for today's date.
- Show times in: the time zone the table is shown in. My device's time zone, the default, uses your phone or computer clock and works in any country. UTC shows the times as most sources quote them.
- Is the forex market open today?: open or closed at this moment, with the day and time of the next close or open and how long until it.
- Countdown: how long until the next session opens or closes while the market is open, for example "London closes in 2 h 10 min".
- Status: whether each session is open at this moment, from your device's clock. The page updates every 30 seconds.
How do you use this as a forex time zone converter?
The table opens in your device's time zone, so every session's open and close is already converted to your local time, with daylight saving applied for today's date. Choose UTC under Show times in to compare with times quoted in UTC elsewhere.
What are the assumptions and limits?
The session hours are the typical business hours of each financial centre, Monday to Friday, so they are a convention rather than an exchange timetable. Public holidays, each symbol's trading hours and your broker's server time can all differ, as the points below explain.
- The hours are the typical business hours of each centre, Monday to Friday. They are a convention, not an exchange timetable, and sources round them differently.
- Your broker's trading hours can differ by symbol. Indices, metals and stock CFDs follow their own market hours, and markets can close early or not open on public holidays. Check each symbol's trading hours in MetaTrader 5.
- Daylight saving dates come from your browser's time-zone data. The page uses your device's clock and sends nothing anywhere.
- A busier session means more liquidity and more volatility, so price moves further in both directions. It does not make a trade more likely to work.
- Spreads usually widen in quiet hours and around the daily rollover at 17:00 New York time, when overnight swap is applied, as spread, commission and swap explains. Prices can open on Sunday away from Friday's close, a gap covered in news, gaps and slippage.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the forex market open?
On Sunday at 22:00 UTC while New York is on winter time, from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March, and at 21:00 UTC in New York's summer time. In winter that is 23:00 at UTC+1, 00:00 Monday at UTC+2, 05:00 Monday at UTC+7 and 06:00 Monday at UTC+8.
When is the London and New York overlap?
It runs from New York's open to London's close: 13:00 to 17:00 UTC in UK and US winter time and 12:00 to 16:00 UTC in their summer time. It is usually the busiest window for major currency pairs.
What time is the London session?
London runs from 08:00 to 17:00 UTC in UK winter time, from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March, and from 07:00 to 16:00 UTC in UK summer time. It opens at 08:00 London time either way, and the calculator shows it in your time zone.
Is the forex market open at the weekend?
No. Trading stops on Friday at 17:00 New York time and restarts on Sunday at 17:00 New York time, which is 22:00 UTC in New York's winter and 21:00 UTC in its summer. Prices can open on Sunday at a different level from Friday's close, which is called a gap.
Why does my platform show different times?
MetaTrader 5 shows prices in the broker's server time, which is often not your local time or UTC. The session hours on this page are in the time zone you choose, so compare like with like, and check each symbol's own trading hours in its specification.
