Pivot Point Calculator
A pivot point calculator turns the previous period’s high, low and close into a pivot level with support and resistance levels around it. The pivot P = (high + low + close) ÷ 3; this calculator shows the Classic, Fibonacci and Camarilla levels side by side.
How do you calculate pivot points?
The pivot point is the average of the previous period's high, low and close, P = (H + L + C) ÷ 3, and the support (S) and resistance (R) levels are set at distances from it. Each method spaces them differently, but all use the range, high minus low, so a wide previous day gives wider levels.
For daily pivots, use yesterday's daily candle. For weekly pivots, use last week's candle. In MetaTrader 5 the D1 and W1 candles give those prices; hover over a candle, or open the Data Window, to read its high, low and close.
What are the Classic, Fibonacci and Camarilla formulas?
Classic pivots use the pivot and the range, Fibonacci pivots add 38.2%, 61.8% and 100% of the range to the pivot, and Camarilla levels are set around the close. In each formula H is the previous high, L the low, C the close, P the pivot and range = H − L.
| Level | Classic | Fibonacci | Camarilla |
|---|---|---|---|
| R4 | C + range × 1.1 ÷ 2 | ||
| R3 | H + 2 × (P − L) | P + range | C + range × 1.1 ÷ 4 |
| R2 | P + range | P + 0.618 × range | C + range × 1.1 ÷ 6 |
| R1 | 2 × P − L | P + 0.382 × range | C + range × 1.1 ÷ 12 |
| P | (H + L + C) ÷ 3 | (H + L + C) ÷ 3 | (H + L + C) ÷ 3 |
| S1 | 2 × P − H | P − 0.382 × range | C − range × 1.1 ÷ 12 |
| S2 | P − range | P − 0.618 × range | C − range × 1.1 ÷ 6 |
| S3 | L − 2 × (H − P) | P − range | C − range × 1.1 ÷ 4 |
| S4 | C − range × 1.1 ÷ 2 |
What is a worked example of EURUSD pivot points?
With a previous high of 1.1000, low of 1.0900 and close of 1.0950, the pivot is 3.2850 ÷ 3 = 1.0950 and the range is 0.0100, or 100 pips. The calculator fills in every level from those three prices; the table shows the results to five decimals.
| Level | Classic | Fibonacci | Camarilla |
|---|---|---|---|
| R3 | 1.11000 | 1.10500 | 1.09775 |
| R2 | 1.10500 | 1.10118 | 1.09683 |
| R1 | 1.10000 | 1.09882 | 1.09592 |
| P | 1.09500 | 1.09500 | 1.09500 |
| S1 | 1.09000 | 1.09118 | 1.09408 |
| S2 | 1.08500 | 1.08882 | 1.09317 |
| S3 | 1.08000 | 1.08500 | 1.09225 |
Camarilla also has R4 at 1.10050 and S4 at 1.08950. Its levels sit closer together than the others because they are fractions of the range around the close.
How do traders use pivot points?
Traders treat the pivot as the day's balance point and the S and R levels as prices where a move may pause or turn, then plan entries, stops and targets around them. A price above the pivot is read as the stronger side for the day, and below it as the weaker side.
A pivot level carries more weight when it lines up with a level the chart has already respected, as explained in support and resistance. Fibonacci pivots use the same ratios as Fibonacci retracement, applied to the previous day's range instead of a swing.
What does each input mean?
Enter the previous period's high, low and close, and the calculator shows all three methods at once. Levels are shown to as many decimals as you type, between two and six, so enter EURUSD prices with four or five decimals and gold with two.
- Previous high: the highest price of the previous day, week or month.
- Previous low: the lowest price of the same period. It must not be above the high.
- Previous close: the last price of the same period. The calculator flags a close outside the high-low range.
Nothing you enter is stored, and the calculator never fetches prices. Daily candles follow your platform's server time, so pivots from two platforms can differ if their days end at different hours.
Frequently asked questions
Which pivot point method is best?
None is better in every market. Classic pivots are the most widely watched, Fibonacci pivots space the levels by the 38.2% and 61.8% ratios, and Camarilla levels cluster near the close, which suits watching for reversals inside a narrow range.
What timeframe should I use for pivot points?
Daily pivots, from the previous day's candle, suit intraday charts such as M15 and H1. Weekly and monthly pivots suit swing trades on H4 and D1 charts. How the timeframes fit together is covered in chart timeframes.
Do pivot points work on gold and indices?
Yes. The formulas use only the high, low and close, so they apply to XAUUSD, US30 or any other symbol. Enter gold prices with two decimals, such as 4,050.00.
How do I add pivot points to MT5?
Calculate the levels here, then draw each one on the chart as a horizontal line from Insert, Objects, Lines. Name each line R1, P, S1 and so on, and redraw them at the start of each new day or week.
What is the difference between a pivot point and support and resistance?
A pivot level is calculated from a formula, while ordinary support and resistance are read from where price turned in the past. Both mark prices where buying or selling has tended to change direction, and traders often combine them.
