BOS in Trading: Break of Structure Meaning (and BOS vs CHoCH)

BOS in trading means break of structure, which is an informal label for a new swing beyond the previous one in a trend’s direction, such as a new higher high in an uptrend.

BOS in trading means break of structure: a candle closes beyond the last swing in the direction of the trend, so the trend has made one more step. In an uptrend that is a close above the last swing high (a bullish BOS). In a downtrend it is a close below the last swing low (a bearish BOS).

The term comes from smart money concepts content and has no official definition, so this page uses the most common version: a candle close beyond the previous swing.

A bullish BOS happens when an uptrend's price closes above its most recent swing high, after a higher low. A bearish BOS happens when a downtrend's price closes below its most recent swing low, after a lower high. Both say the same thing: the existing trend made one more step in its own direction.

Trend Structure before the break BOS happens when What it records
Uptrend (bullish) Higher highs and higher lows A candle closes above the last swing high The uptrend made another higher high
Downtrend (bearish) Lower highs and lower lows A candle closes below the last swing low The downtrend made another lower low

The swings come from the swing high and swing low comparisons in how to tell a trending market from a ranging market, which covers market structure in full.

How is BOS different from CHoCH?

BOS confirms the trend: price breaks a swing in the trend's own direction. CHoCH, change of character, is the first break against the trend: in an uptrend, a close below the last higher low; in a downtrend, a close above the last lower high. BOS says the pattern continued; CHoCH says it was interrupted.

Label What happened Uptrend example Downtrend example
Break of structure (BOS) A new swing beyond the last one, in the trend's direction Close above the last swing high Close below the last swing low
Change of character (CHoCH) The first swing that breaks against the trend Close below the last higher low Close above the last lower high

Related informal terms include the order block, the fair value gap and the liquidity sweep.

Worked example: bullish BOS on EURUSD

Swing Price Compared with Label
Swing low 1.0800 — —
Swing high 1.0860 — —
Swing low 1.0825 Above 1.0800 Higher low
Candle close 1.0872 Above the 1.0860 swing high, in the trend's direction BOS
Swing high 1.0890 Above 1.0860 Higher high

The close at 1.0872 is the bullish BOS: it is above the last swing high of 1.0860, and it came after a higher low at 1.0825. From that close to the next high at 1.0890 is 18 pips. At 0.10 lot of EURUSD, about $1 per pip, that is about $18: a gain for a long position and a loss for a short one. If price later closed below the higher low of 1.0825, that close would be the CHoCH.

A rising price line with a swing low at 1.0800, a swing high at 1.0860 and a higher low at 1.0825, then a close at 1.0872 above the dashed swing-high level marked BOS, then a higher high at 1.0890
Bullish BOS: in an uptrend, a candle closes above the last swing high, so the trend has made one more step up.

Worked example: bearish BOS and CHoCH on USDZAR

Swing Price Compared with Label
Swing high 18.3800 — —
Swing low 18.3000 — —
Swing high 18.3200 Below 18.3800 Lower high
Swing low 18.2200 Below 18.3000 Lower low
New low 18.1500 Below 18.2200, in the trend's direction BOS
Next high 18.3400 Above the last lower high of 18.3200 CHoCH

The BOS at 18.1500 records that the downtrend made one more lower low. The CHoCH at 18.3400 records that the next rally went above the previous lower high. On a position of 10,000 US dollars, the move from 18.1500 to 18.3400 is 0.1900, or R1,900: a gain for a long position and a loss for a short one.

A falling price line with a swing high, swing low, lower high and lower low, then a new low below the dashed lower-low level marked BOS, then a rally above the dashed lower-high level marked CHoCH
A break of structure is one more step in the trend; a change of character is the first swing against it.

How do traders mark BOS consistently?

Traders mark BOS consistently by fixing three rules in advance, before they label a single swing on the chart. They decide whether a candle close or only a wick counts as the break, which swing rule and timeframe define a swing, and how to read the swings after each BOS. Changing any one of these moves every label.

How do you mark BOS in MetaTrader 5?

MetaTrader 5 has no built-in BOS or CHoCH tool, so traders mark structure by hand with horizontal lines at each confirmed swing. Draw a line at each swing high and swing low from the Insert menu, then check whether a later candle closed beyond it. A close beyond the line in the trend's direction is the BOS.

The horizontal line tool is under Insert, Objects, Lines. Practise the labels on a free demo account before you use them on a live chart.

What do traders often get wrong about BOS?

A common mistake is treating a break of structure as a professional entry signal, when it only labels a swing that has already formed. Calling it a footprint of institutional orders is a claim no source here supports. Traders who use it pair it with a stop-loss and a position size they have worked out first.

Frequently asked questions

Is a BOS a candle close or a wick?

Sources differ. The stricter and more common rule needs a candle body to close beyond the swing; a wick that pokes through and closes back inside does not count. Some traders accept a wick. Pick one rule and apply it to every swing.

What is the difference between BOS and CHoCH?

A BOS breaks a swing in the trend's direction and says the trend continued. A CHoCH breaks a swing against the trend, such as a close below the last higher low in an uptrend, and says the pattern of swings was interrupted.

Which timeframe is best for BOS?

There is no single best one. A BOS on H4 or D1 describes the larger trend; one on M15 describes a short swing inside it. Many traders read structure on a higher timeframe first, then look at a lower one, as in multi-timeframe analysis.
