Forex Trading in Nigeria: How Beginners Start and Trade

How Nigerians start forex trading, from practising on a free KCM demo to trading gold, forex and indices in US dollars on KCM Pro or MT5 on your phone, with costs and sizes worked out in dollars and the busiest hours in WAT.

Most Nigerians learn how a trade is priced and costed, practise on a free KCM demo, then trade gold, forex and indices in US dollars on KCM Pro or MetaTrader 5 (MT5). This guide shows the arithmetic step by step.

It covers how to start with KCM Trade, set up MT5 on a phone and place a trade, what you can trade, what a trade costs, how much you need and how to size a trade, the busiest hours in West Africa Time (WAT), and how to trade smoothly on mobile data.

How do you start forex trading in Nigeria?

Learn the mechanics, practise on a free KCM demo until sizing and costing a trade are routine, then open a live KCM Trade account and trade on KCM Pro or MT5. Seven steps take you from a first lesson to a first live trade, in this order:

  1. Learn how a trade works. Retail forex is usually traded as contracts for difference (CFDs): see what a CFD is and lots, pips and pip value.
  2. Open a KCM demo in KCM Pro. Register at KCM Pro, open a demo account and practise on its charts. It trades virtual money under the same conditions as a real KCM account.
  3. Install KCM's MT5 on your phone. The KCM MT5 download page links the free app for iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play or the APK), plus Windows, macOS and KCM's WebTerminal. Full steps are in how to install MetaTrader 5.
  4. Place demo trades. Set a stop loss and take profit on every trade, using the steps in the next section.
  5. Practise the numbers. Before each demo trade, write down the pip value, margin and cost in dollars, then check them against the platform. The pip value calculator, margin calculator and position size calculator do the arithmetic.
  6. Go live with KCM Trade. Open and fund a KCM account as set out below. Trade on KCM Pro's charts, or enter the login, password and server shown in KCM Pro in MT5 exactly as given; KCM's live MT5 server is KCMTrade-Live.
  7. Keep records. Log each trade, deposit and withdrawal in dollars. You need them to measure your results and to file tax.

How do you place a trade in the MT5 app?

MetaQuotes' Android help describes the same flow as desktop:

  1. In Quotes, tap the symbol (for example XAUUSD or EURUSD) and choose New Order. If it is not listed, tap the Add icon at the top of Quotes and search for it.
  2. Set the volume, then the stop loss and take profit.
  3. Tap Buy by Market or Sell by Market.
  4. The position appears on the Trade tab with its profit or loss. To close it on Android, press and hold the position, choose Close Position and confirm. Closed trades move to History.

The desktop steps, pending orders and one-click trading are in how to place your first trade in MT5.

How do you start trading with KCM Trade in Nigeria?

Register at KCM Pro, practise on a KCM demo, open an STP account, fund it, then trade live on KCM Pro's charts or in MetaTrader 5 at the sizes you practised. The STP account is held in US dollars, so gold, forex and indices are all priced, costed and settled in one currency.

  1. Register and verify at KCM Pro. Sign up at pro.kcm.trade, then verify your account in KCM Pro. Verification comes before your first trade.
  2. Practise on a KCM demo. Open a demo account in KCM Pro and practise on its charts. It trades virtual money under the same conditions as a real account, you can open as many as you like, and you set its balance in KCM Pro to what you plan to deposit.
  3. Open an STP account. Open it in KCM Pro: it starts from US$20 with no commission, and you choose leverage of up to 1:1000 on forex and gold, or 1:100 on indices, when you create the account. Larger traders can also open an ECN account from US$30,000.
  4. Fund it under Funds in KCM Pro. The payment methods for the country you registered from show there, with limits and processing times, and each deposit from Nigeria lands in your US-dollar account. KCM's methods include bank cards (Visa, Mastercard and JCB) and mobile banking apps in certain countries, electronic payment systems, USDT and bank cashier slips. KCM charges no deposit or withdrawal fee, and you withdraw by the method you deposited with.
  5. Trade on KCM Pro or MT5. Trade directly on the charts inside KCM Pro, or log in to KCM's MetaTrader 5 with the login, password and server shown in KCM Pro, and trade the sizes you practised on the demo.

What can you trade from Nigeria with KCM?

From Nigeria you trade what every KCM client trades: gold (XAUUSD), over 40 forex pairs such as EURUSD, and indices such as US30, in a US-dollar account on KCM Pro or MT5. Profits, losses and costs all come out in dollars, so one set of numbers covers every trade.

KCM's specification tables list these figures for some of the most traded symbols:

Symbol What it tracks 1 lot is 1 pip on 1 lot
XAUUSD Spot gold in US dollars 100 ounces $10
EURUSD Euro against the US dollar 100,000 euros $10
GBPUSD British pound against the US dollar 100,000 pounds $10
US30 Dow Jones Industrial Average 10 × the index $10
US100 Nasdaq 100 20 × the index $20
US500 S&P 500 50 × the index $50

Each of these trades from 0.01 lot up to 20 lots per order. On gold, 0.01 lot is 1 ounce, so a $1 move in the gold price is worth $1 on 0.01 lot and $100 on 1 lot. KCM lists more than 200 instruments in all, with the full tables on its forex, precious metals and indices pages. Gold is covered step by step in how to trade gold, and index CFDs in what are indices.

How much money do you need to start forex in Nigeria?

A KCM STP account opens from US$20, and the number that matters after that is what each pip is worth at your trade size. On EURUSD, 0.01 lot moves your account $0.10 per pip and 0.10 lot $1.00; on gold, 0.01 lot moves $1 for each $1 change in price.

Worked example: a $1,000 account at two sizes

Figures used: a KCM STP account with a $1,000 balance, EURUSD at 1.1000 and an example leverage of 1:100.

Trade 30 pips for you 30 pips against you 100 pips for you 100 pips against you
0.01 lot +$3, +0.3% of the account −$3, −0.3% +$10, +1% −$10, −1%
0.10 lot +$30, +3% −$30, −3% +$100, +10% −$100, −10%

Size changes everything here. KCM's stop-out level is 20%: at 0.10 lot, close-out is reached when equity falls to $22, a fifth of the $110 margin, which is 978 pips against you, a loss of $978. At 0.01 lot the margin is $11, so close-out would need equity to fall to $2.20, which is about 9,978 pips against you.

What does a trade cost on KCM in US dollars?

A trade on a KCM account costs the spread, plus swap on nights it stays open where swap-free status does not apply; there is no commission, so the whole cost is one dollar figure. Spread cost is the spread in pips × pip value per lot × lots.

KCM's STP spreads start from 1.2 pips on EURUSD, and on XAUUSD from 1.6 pips. At those spreads, with no commission:

Trade Pip value Spread cost Commission
0.10 lot EURUSD $1 a pip 1.2 × $1 = $1.20 $0
0.01 lot XAUUSD $0.10 a pip 1.6 × $0.10 = $0.16 $0

With those costs, a 30-pip move for you on the EURUSD trade nets +$30 − $1.20 = +$28.80, and a 30-pip move against you comes to −$30 − $1.20 = −$31.20. On the gold trade, a $5 rise in the gold price is +$5, or $4.84 after the spread, and a $5 fall costs $5.16.

KCM gives swap-free status by default on eligible instruments, except to accounts that frequently hold positions overnight. Where swap does apply, open the symbol's Specification in MT5 to read swap long, swap short and which weekday carries three days of swap. In MT5 on desktop, right-click Market Watch and switch on the Spread column to see the live spread in points (on EURUSD, 10 points = 1 pip). The spread, commission and swap lesson has more examples.

How do you size a trade from the dollars you risk?

Pick the amount you will risk on the trade, set your stop distance, and divide: lot size = risk in dollars ÷ (stop in pips × $10 per pip per lot on EURUSD). The result is the largest size that keeps a stopped-out trade at your chosen risk.

With 1% of a $1,000 account at risk, that is $10. With a 20-pip stop, the size is $10 ÷ (20 × $10) = 0.05 lot. If the stop is hit, you lose $10; if a 40-pip take profit is hit, you gain $20. Gold works the same way at $10 per pip per lot: a $5 stop is 50 pips, so $10 ÷ (50 × $10) = 0.02 lot, which is 2 ounces. The XAUUSD lot size calculator does the gold arithmetic.

A stop loss closes at the next available price, so when the market gaps past your level the fill is further away. If price gaps 50 pips beyond the EURUSD stop, the loss is 70 pips × $0.50 = $35. News, gaps and slippage shows how gaps form, and position sizing covers other pairs.
