Scalping in Forex: How Scalp Trading Works, With Examples
Scalping is a trading style that opens and closes many small trades within seconds to minutes to capture a few pips each time. This guide explains how a scalp trade works on the M1 and M5 charts, what spread and commission cost a scalper, the main scalping strategies, and a worked EURUSD plan in MetaTrader 5.
Scalping is a trading style that opens and closes many small trades within seconds to minutes, aiming to capture a few pips per trade from short price moves. Scalpers usually work the one-minute (M1) and five-minute (M5) charts, trade the most liquid pairs in the busiest sessions, and treat spread and commission as the main cost to control.
Because each target is small, the costs of each trade decide most of the result. This guide shows how a scalp trade is built, what it costs, which pairs and hours suit it, and how to run the routine on a MetaTrader 5 (MT5) demo account.
What is scalping in trading?
Scalping is the shortest-term trading style: a scalper holds each position for seconds to a few minutes and closes it once a target of a few pips, or a tight stop, is reached. The aim is many small results that add up over a session, rather than one large move held for days.
A scalper might take 5 to 30 trades in one session. Each trade has a fixed plan written before the entry: the setup, the stop loss a few pips away, the target a few pips beyond the entry and the position size. Nothing is held overnight, so a scalper pays no swap.
The style suits traders who can sit in front of the chart for a block of one to three hours and follow rules quickly. It uses the same chart reading as longer styles, from support and resistance to trends and ranges, on smaller timeframes.
How is scalping different from day and swing trading?
Scalping holds trades for seconds to minutes, day trading closes everything within the same day, and swing trading holds for several days to a few weeks. The shorter the hold, the more trades you take, the smaller each target, and the larger the share of each target that spread and commission take.
| Style | Typical hold | Typical chart | Trades per week | Example target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scalping | Seconds to minutes | M1, M5 | 25 to 150 | 5 to 15 pips |
| Day trading | Minutes to hours, closed the same day | M15, H1 | 5 to 20 | 20 to 50 pips |
| Swing trading | Days to weeks | H4, D1 | 1 to 5 | 100 to 300 pips |
Scalping is one form of day trading, since every position closes the same day. What day trading is is covered on the main KCM site, and holding for days is covered in the swing trading guide. Trading vs investing compares all of these with long-term investing.
How does a scalping trade work?
A scalping trade sets the stop and target a few pips from the entry, sizes the position so the stop costs a fixed share of the account, and closes as soon as either level is hit. The example below buys a pullback on EURUSD on the M1 chart during the London and New York overlap.
Worked example (example numbers, not current prices). The M15 chart is in an uptrend. On M1, EURUSD pulls back to 1.08500, an earlier resistance level that is now support, and a bullish candle closes there. The account is $2,000 and the plan risks 0.5% per trade, $10.
| Item | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Entry (buy) | Close of the bullish candle | 1.08500 |
| Stop loss | Below the pullback low | 1.08440, 6 pips |
| Take profit | Just under the session high | 1.08590, 9 pips |
| Pip value per standard lot | 100,000 × 0.0001 | $10 |
| Position size | $10 ÷ (6 pips × $10) = 0.167 lot | 0.16 lot (rounded down) |
| Pip value at 0.16 lot | 0.16 × $10 | $1.60 |
| Loss if the stop is hit | 6 × $1.60 | −$9.60 |
| Gain if the target is hit | 9 × $1.60 | +$14.40 |
The plan is 6 pips of risk for 9 pips of reward, a risk reward ratio of 1 : 1.5. How pip value is worked out on any pair is in lots, pips and pip value, and position sizing shows the size sum in full. The next section adds the costs, which change the picture.
How much do spreads cost a scalper?
A scalper pays the spread, and on some accounts a commission, on every trade, so costs take a far larger share of a 9-pip target than of a 100-pip one. In the example, 0.8 pip of spread plus $7 per lot of commission adds up to 1.5 pips per trade, a sixth of the target.
The spread is the gap between the bid and the ask; you buy at the ask and close at the bid. Using the same 0.16 lot trade:
| Cost | Working | Per trade |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | 0.8 pip × $1.60 | $1.28 |
| Commission (round turn) | $7 per lot × 0.16 lot | $1.12 |
| Total | $1.28 + $1.12 | $2.40, which is $2.40 ÷ $1.60 = 1.5 pips |
| Before costs | After 1.5 pips of costs | |
|---|---|---|
| Winning trade | +9 pips, +$14.40 | +7.5 pips, +$12.00 |
| Losing trade | −6 pips, −$9.60 | −7.5 pips, −$12.00 |
| Win rate needed to break even | 6 ÷ (6 + 9) = 40% | 7.5 ÷ (7.5 + 7.5) = 50% |
Costs turned a 1 : 1.5 plan into 1 : 1, and the share of trades that must win to break even rose from 40% to 50%. On a swing trade with a 100-pip target, the same 1.5 pips is only 1.5% of the target. Over 20 scalps in a session the costs come to 20 × $2.40 = $48.
Three habits keep this under control: trade only when the spread is at its normal level, prefer a raw-spread account with commission when you trade often, and set targets at least five times the total cost. The trading cost calculator works out spread and commission for any size, and spread, commission and swap explains each charge.
What are the most common scalping strategies?
The four most common scalping strategies are trend pullbacks, range trading, session breakouts and moving average crossovers. Each one trades in the direction set by a higher timeframe, uses a stop of a few pips and closes at a fixed target or the next level on the chart.
| Strategy | The rule | Stop and target |
|---|---|---|
| Trend pullback | M15 trend up; on M1, buy a pullback to a support level or a rising 20-period moving average when a bullish candle closes there | Stop below the pullback low; target the last high |
| Range trading | Price is between a clear support and resistance on M5; buy near support and sell near resistance | Stop a few pips outside the range; target the middle or the far side |
| Session breakout | Mark the high and low of the quiet hour before London opens; trade a close outside it in the direction of the break | Stop inside the range; target 1 to 1.5 times the range height |
| Moving average crossover | On M1 or M5, trade when a 9-period average crosses a 21-period average in the direction of the M15 trend | Stop beyond the last swing; target 1.5 times the stop |
Pick one strategy and test it alone, so you know which rule produced the results. Breakouts suit busy sessions, while range trading suits the quieter Asian hours. Breakout vs mean reversion explains when each assumption holds, breakouts and fakeouts shows how to filter false breaks, and moving averages covers the crossover settings.
What is the best timeframe for scalping?
The best timeframe for scalping is the one-minute (M1) or five-minute (M5) chart for entries, with the 15-minute (M15) or one-hour (H1) chart to set the direction. Trading only in the higher timeframe's direction cuts the number of signals and removes many trades against the larger move.
| Job | Chart | What you read |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | M15 or H1 | Trend up, down or range; the nearest support and resistance |
| Setup | M5 | The level or pattern you plan to trade |
| Entry | M1 | The reaction candle, and the exact stop and target |
M1 gives the most signals and the tightest stops, but also the most noise. M5 gives fewer signals with stops a few pips wider. Multi-timeframe analysis shows how to pair the charts, and chart timeframes explains what each candle covers.
When is the best time to scalp forex?
The best time to scalp forex is the London and New York overlap, about 13:00 to 17:00 UTC, when the two largest trading centres are open together and spreads are usually at their narrowest. At UTC+8 (maritime Southeast Asia and East Asia) that is about 21:00 to 01:00.
| Window | UTC | UTC+1 (West and Central Africa) | UTC+2 (Southern Africa) | UTC+7 (mainland Southeast Asia) | UTC+8 (maritime Southeast Asia and East Asia) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| London open | About 07:00 to 09:00 | About 08:00 to 10:00 | About 09:00 to 11:00 | About 14:00 to 16:00 | About 15:00 to 17:00 |
| London and New York overlap | About 13:00 to 17:00 | About 14:00 to 18:00 | About 15:00 to 19:00 | About 20:00 to 00:00 | About 21:00 to 01:00 |
Hours shift by one hour when the UK and US change their clocks. The Bank for International Settlements found that sales desks in the United Kingdom handled 38% of global foreign exchange turnover in April 2025 and the United States 19%, which is why those hours carry the most volume. Avoid the first minutes around major releases such as US jobs data, when spreads widen and fills can slip, as explained in news gaps and slippage. The forex market hours tool shows which sessions are open now.
Which pairs are best for scalping?
The best pairs for scalping are the most traded ones, EURUSD, USDJPY and GBPUSD, because heavy turnover usually means the narrowest spreads. EURUSD had 21.2% of global turnover in April 2025, USDJPY 14.3% and GBPUSD 7.6%, according to the BIS Triennial Survey.
| Instrument | Why scalpers use it | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| EURUSD | The most traded pair; usually the narrowest spread | Quieter outside London and New York hours |
| USDJPY | Deep liquidity; active in Asian hours too | Moves fast around Bank of Japan news |
| GBPUSD | Larger moves per minute than EURUSD | Spread a little wider |
| Gold (XAUUSD) | Large intraday ranges | Wider spread in dollar terms; size down |
Stick to two or three instruments so you learn how each moves at your hours. The best forex pairs to trade guide compares spreads and ranges, and the gold trading guide covers gold's contract size. A 14-period ATR on M5 shows how far price moves in a typical five minutes, which helps you set stops that sit outside normal volatility.
How do you scalp in MetaTrader 5?
To scalp in MetaTrader 5, set up an M1 chart and an M15 chart side by side, turn on One Click Trading so orders go out without a confirmation dialog, and set the stop loss and take profit on every order. Practise the routine on a demo account first.
- Charts. Open the pair on M1 and on M15 (or M5 and H1). Mark support, resistance and the session high and low on both.
- Spread. Right-click Market Watch and show the Spread column, so you can see when it widens.
- One Click Trading. Turn it on in the platform settings. MetaQuotes notes that orders are then sent with no confirmation, so check the volume before each click, as the One Click Trading help explains.
- Order. Press F9 for the order window, or use the panel on the chart, and type the stop loss and take profit before you send. A pending order at your level saves you from chasing price.
- Depth of Market. On some symbols the Depth of Market window shows prices and volumes near the current price and lets you trade from it, as covered in Depth of Market in MT5.
If you trade from a computer far from your broker's server, or run an Expert Advisor, a forex VPS keeps the platform running close to it.
How do you avoid the common scalping mistakes?
The fixes for the common scalping mistakes are to count costs in every plan, trade only in the higher timeframe's direction, cap the number of trades and losses per session, and record every trade. Most scalping problems come from too many unplanned trades rather than from the strategy.
- Ignoring costs. Set targets at least five times the total cost per trade, and skip trades when the spread is wider than normal.
- Fighting the trend. Take only signals that agree with the M15 or H1 direction.
- Overtrading. Set a maximum, such as 10 trades or three losses in a row per session, then stop.
- Moving the stop. The stop is part of the plan; widening it after entry breaks the size sum. Revenge trading explains why the urge comes after a loss.
- No record. Log each trade in a trading journal with the setup, the spread and the result, and judge the rules after 50 or more trades.
Try it on demo
On an MT5 demo account, open EURUSD on M1 and M15 at the start of the London and New York overlap. Pick one strategy from the table above and write the rules down. Take 20 trades over a few sessions with a 0.5% risk per trade, and log the setup, spread, entry, stop, target and result of each. Then compare your win rate with the break-even rate after costs and decide what to change.
Frequently asked questions
How many pips do scalpers aim for?
Most scalpers aim for 5 to 15 pips per trade on major pairs, with stops of a similar size. The target should be at least five times the total cost per trade, so a 1.5-pip cost points to a target of about 8 pips or more.
Is scalping good for beginners?
Scalping teaches fast, rule-based execution, but it gives little time to think and costs take a large share of each target. Many beginners start with an M15 or H1 plan, then move down to M5 and M1 once their rules and journal are in place. A demo account is the place to try it first.
Can you scalp gold?
Yes. Gold (XAUUSD) moves a lot within the day, which suits scalping, but its spread in dollar terms is wider than on EURUSD and one lot usually covers 100 ounces. Check the contract size in the symbol's Specification window in MetaTrader 5 and size down to match.
Do you pay swap when scalping?
No, not on trades opened and closed within the same day. Swap is charged on positions held past the daily rollover time, and scalps are closed long before it. A scalper pays only the spread and, on some accounts, a commission.
